Bob Dylan’s 2008 tour started strongly with a three-night residency at the House Of Blues, in Dallas, Texas, a relatively small gig holding around 1,600. It acted as a warm-up for a five-country swing through Latin America, starting tomorrow in Mexico City.
Both the setlists and the band line-up suggest that the 2008 gigs will be a straight run-on from the format that proved so popular last year. Why change when you’re winning?
The three Dallas setlists – an ever-changing mixture of classic repertoire anchored around tunes from the current album, Modern Times – continued the pattern of introducing new tunes every night, thus reinforcing the addiction of habitual attenders.
In three Dallas nights, Dylan played a remarkable total of 35 different songs. Favourites I’d love to have heard included Girl Of The North Country, Positively 4th Street and Mississippi.
Whatever Dylan plays, of course, someone is bound to want to hear something else. Thanks to Martin Cowan for this note:
“Nice to see Bob on the road again and an interesting set list from the first two shows. My only comment is that while it's nice to see an abundance of recent songs in the sets it's a shame that he is almost completely ignoring 70s and 80s songs. A show with representatives from all decades would be good to see.”

Dylan: big in Germany - encore
Thanks to Katrin Diez for her detailed account of Dylan’s visibility in Germany:
“I can tell you that Dylan is still very important in Germany, especially for better-educated people with good English knowledge. (Excuse my mistakes - I`ve been out of school for a very long time and am only used to reading, not writing).
We have in the town library of Frankfurt a lot of books about him
(Williams, Shepard, Klein, Detering ...) his Chronicles and several books with lyrics (the actual one and older works) and notes. And there are a lot of CDs.
It is not easy to get them, you have to order them because a lot of people are keen on reading or listening.
In the ‘70s a lot of teachers were fans and it was normal to discuss the songs during the lessons, but even now my daughter learned some songs and my son had to play Blowin’ in the Wind on flute in a school concert.
Nearly every big bookshop with a musical department offers books about Dylan. And you can order everything at amazon.de or jpc.de - there are about hundreds of entries. And you can buy nearly everything at ebay.de.
The popularity of Dylan is shown in the fact that Germany has held the only art exhibition of his drawings. And there were a lot of articles about it in the press.
On special occasions (Dylan’s birthday) they show Don`t Look Back or other movies on TV. These days there are a lot of ads for the new movie everywhere.
Here are some new German books about Dylan:
* Bob Dylan - Ein Kongress, Herausgeber; Axel Honneth, Peter Kemper & Richard Klein, Edition Suhrkamp 2007
* Richard Klein - My name it is nothing: Bob Dylan: Nicht Pop Nicht Kunst, Lukas Verlag 2006
* Olaf Benzinger - Bob Dylan Seine Musik und sein Leben, Deutscher Taschenbuchverlag 2006
* Heinrich Detering - Bob Dylan, Reclamverlag 2006.”

Suze Rotolo’s memoir: encore
Thanks to Ian Woodward:
“I, too, am looking forward to Suze Rotolo's memoir but my impression, from the title as much as anything else, is that it will be about her life, times and activities in Greenwich Village as a whole, in the 1960s, of which her relationship with Dylan was but a part.
“Of course, a publisher is almost bound to stress the Dylan part of the book, particularly any salacious aspects, and may even have pushed her to increase the Dylan content, but I suspect the book will be as interesting for providing contextual background as detail.
“The press release, which I didn't see but it must have been a press release as quite a number of different newspapers reproduced identical texts, concentrated almost entirely on the Dylan connection. If I am right, then this press release may be understandable but misleading.”

Memphis Minnie blues references in Modern Times
Thanks to Vinnie Del Basso:
There are several Memphis Minnie blues references in Modern Times. Here are a couple:
THUNDER ON THE MOUNTAIN:
I was thinkin' 'bout Alicia Keys, couldn't keep from crying
When she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line
I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be
I been looking for her even clear through Tennessee
Compare the Memphis Minnie song, MA RAINEY:
I was thinking about Ma Rainey, wonder where could Ma Rainey be
I was thinking about Ma Rainey, wonder where could Ma Rainey be
I been looking for her, even been 'n old Tennessee
She was born in Georgia, traveled all over this world
She was born in Georgia, traveled all over this world
And she's the best blues singer, peoples, I ever heard
When she made Bo Weavil Blues, I was living way down the line
When she made Bo Weavil Blues, I was living way down the line
Every time I hear that record, I just couldn't keep from crying
* Note 1: Minnie's tribute to Ma Rainey was recorded about six months after Ma Rainey's death;
* Note 2: Bo Weavil Blues, recorded in December 1923, was Ma Rainey's first record and it was also her first hit.
WORKING MAN'S BLUES #2:
I got a brand new suit and a brand new wife
I can live on rice and beans
Compare the song DOWN IN NEW ORLEANS:
Well, my man is a doctor and he lives off of rice and beans
Well, my man is a doctor and he lives off of rice and beans
That's why he done gone and left me back down in New Orleans
* Note 1: rice and beans, though usually "red beans and rice" is used by countless others as an evocation of "back downhome";
All lyrics quoted are used for the purpose of criticism or review.

Your favourite Dylan song: encore, encore
Thanks to Peter Truin:
“I'd always thought that I was, perhaps, the only one whose choice song was Sad Eyed Lady, but now I know I am not alone.
“For a long time I found it very difficult to choose just one, there are so many songs that could easily be considered a favourite while actually listening to them. For many years I thought Positively 4th Street was it, then Blind Willie McTell, then Series of Dreams, and for a short time, Not Dark Yet, and I am not too proud to admit to liking LARS.
“However, over the last few years, I have come to realise that Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, was the one that I have really preferred all along. I just love the song, from the wonderful opening bars (it's such a contrast to the preceding track on the album) through all those marvellous lyrics, to the long closing instrumental.
“When I am listening to it, despite its great length, I wish it would never end, and I am rarely able to play it just once.
“This has taken a long time to write because, of course, I had to stop to listen to the song (I couldn't concentrate on writing while listening to that superb music) and I ended up spending an hour playing it five times! Now that I have finished writing, I think I'll play it just once more ...”
And thanks to Nick Kolodziejski:
“I would have to say that Visions of Johanna would get my vote. It's sad and confusing, but in a wonderful way.”

London first night review (2) - Europe tour news (22)
Thanks to Sharon Hill:
“Having grown up with the music of Dylan, courtesy of my dad, I was so excited to be finally seeing him live, but also with some trepidation; would the show live up to expectations or would I be greatly disappointed? He is knocking on a bit now: would his voice be up to the job or would he be flagging?
“I had no need to worry. I must admit at first I was a bit disappointed that the old favourites weren’t the acoustic versions of the originals, but once I got over that initial surprise I was totally enamoured of the man. The reworked songs of my childhood were no less favourable, just different!
“The whole night was fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised by how good his voice was live and amazed at what a great musician he is. I honestly wasn’t expecting such a great show. This concert exceeded all my expectations and I went home happy that my perception of the great man hadn’t changed!
“Well done, Bob – can’t wait to see you again!”

London (first night) review - Europe tour news (21)
Thanks to Gerald Bamford, song and dance man in Back Pages, the Norfolk-based Dylan tribute band:
“Like Saturday’s Sheffield show, London on Sunday was hugely enjoyable. Dylan’s now doing what other rockpop acts have always done, but what he occasionally didn’t do - touring the new album.
“While promoting Modern Times and “Love And Theft”, the classic repertoire is sampled in exactly the same style. So the new versions of old songs fit into a show with a consistent r‘n’b/rockabilly style typical of the latest two releases, played as well as you’d hope in an arena setting.
“Highlight at Wembley: an amazing Nettie Moore. It’s a lovely ballad, and Dylan sang a beautifully arranged version which allows the emotion of the song to shine through. Denny’s Freeman’s guitar was remarkable.
“Blind Willie McTell, played here on the tour for the first time, was enriched by Donnie Herron’s banjo.
“This band is for bopping, so you don’t get the dynamic variety you used to when Dylan switched from acoustic to electric and back, as in the shows at the turn of the Millennium. And you don’t get the intense, varied emotional palette of great shows like Portsmouth in September 2000.
“The Sheffield and London shows I attended were an enjoyable summary of where Dylan’s peerless performance art is right now. And that’s all right with me.”

Sheffield last night – two reviews - Europe tour news (20)
Thanks to Nick Hall for his pithy review:
“Dylan kicked ass tonight in Sheffield! Truly, a great gig!”
Thanks also to Gerald Bamford, who’s been going to see Dylan since being enlisted to boo at the 1966 Cardiff gig.
He’s now the song and dance man in Back Pages, the Norfolk-based Dylan tribute band. Hmmm… Dylan played My Back Pages for the first time on the tour in Sheffield last night. I wonder…?
“Sheffield was a strong, enjoyable gig. It had a cohesive style which made it hang together. The newer material came across strongly. Highlight was High Water. The band was in control of the material throughout, with some deft arrangements. They even looked darned good.
“The sound from our seats near the front was excellent. But the crowd insisted on standing, for what was really a laid-back gig intended for listening, not bopping.
“A fine performance. On to London for Sunday’s gig.”

Glasgow: "exhaustingly good"- Europe tour news (16)
Thanks to Jamie Black:
“Here is my review of the gig last night. And what a gig it was!
“Dylan at SECC 11/04/07 - You hear the scare stories about Dylan gigs, with even diehard fans warning you what to expect. My biggest worry was that he was going to just churn out the songs in a disinterested drawl, making the whole thing a token gesture for all concerned.
“But this gig surpassed even my childish excitement as he powered through some unexpected classics as well as relishing the fresh energy of Modern Times.
“One of the highlights of the show was his rendition of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, which was as true to the ethos of H61 as you could ask. But he didn't pull any punches on his foray into Blonde on Blonde either, with some rousing harp playing on You Go Your Way And
I'll Go Mine, and uncompromising vocals on Stuck Inside of Mobile.
“A brilliant surprise came with the rendition of John Brown, this version staying true to its folky origins but gaining a dramatic grip on the audience with the help of Dylan's band.
“As I expected, songs from Modern Times were excellent live, and again all credit to the class and craftsmanship of the big man's fellow musicians. Rollin' and Tumblin' sticks out as an example of pure passionate power, but his delicate performances of Levee’s Gonna Break and Ain't Talkin' were nothing less than exquisite.
“To cut a very long story too short, Dylan was simply on his game last night. His vocals were perfectly delivered in almost every instance, capturing the unique drama and grasp of poetic performance that characterise the classics we know and love. The music was beautiful and uncompromising as Dylan took on joy, passion, love and murder to maximum cathartic effect.
“The whole thing was exhaustingly good.”

Review of Glasgow last night - Europe tour news (15)
Thanks to David Harris:
“Bob doesn't do Edinburgh, so we have to come to the soulless metal tent on the Clyde to see him, with 10,000 others. No matter, we're sold on the Master anyway and the pilgrimage is always good for building up the excitement.
“I'm taking my 19 year old son to his first meeting with Bob and have paid a fortune to touts for front row seats. Band had had a day off, having done 2 nights in Amsterdam Sunday and Monday.
“As expected, he opened with a rocky "Cat's in the well", followed by "Aint me babe", reminding us all that he can do as many versions of these as he chooses.
“ "Just like Tom Thumbs Blues" ran into "Its alright Ma", and I'm in heaven with the rest of the baldy aficionados in row A. It’s a bit disappointing to see that the son is not quite so smitten - he doesn’t know all the lyrics, though, and that’s the problem. Meanwhile Bob switches to organ and can be seen flexing his stiff old shoulders in the gaps between numbers as the strain on this rocking old man briefly shows.
“The Levee’s gonna break" - a favourite. “When the deal goes Down” was easy listening and beautifully sung. “You go your way and I’ll go mine" was a bit raspy and fairly tuneless… a low point for me.
"John Brown" was the surprise of the evening, taking us right back to the ‘60s and reminding us that Vietnam and Iraq are the same show. "Rolling and Tumbling" rolls along. "Hard Rain" - one of the best. "Spirit on the Water" was and is a bit schmaltzy for me. "Stuck inside of mobile " a wee bit messy for my liking. "Ain’t talkin" – memorable. "Summer days" - a worn-out star... Naw!
“Beautifully crafted "Rolling stone" was the band at their best, I thought. The encore was "Thunder on the Mountain" and the inevitable Watchtower.
“Overall, this was a memorable gig, as you would expect from the master craftsman. His voice was missing some of the time and the band were good, but not as slick as some he’s had. You just can’t help but wonder at this living legend who still packs them in young and old.
“Welcome back to Scotland, Bob. We know your heart really is in the Highlands.”
