New version Don’t Look Back DVD released today

The new version of Don’t Look Back on DVD is finally released today in England. It looks like the product of the year.

While the new standard edition single disc hardly excites – Pennebaker’s masterpiece has been available on DVD for several years - the double disc box (details below) is a must-buy.

But you’d be silly to pay full price (£23). I’ve ordered my copy from 101cd.com, at £15.95 delivered, the best deal I could find - amazon.co.uk were selling at £12.99 but you had to make the order up to £15 to get free del and they were quoting 7 weeks wait when I looked last week.

Earlier article on The Dylan Daily:

Don’t Look Back on DVD - biggest Dylan event of 2007 to date

The DVD re-release of Don’t Look Back, the classic fly-on-the-wall documentary, looks like being the biggest Dylan event of 2007 to date. Pre-orders on amazon.com have already put it inside the online retailer’s top 10,000 DVD titles.

The film tracks Dylan at his iconic, sneering, imperious peak (as well as his court of jesters) on the 1965 English tour. It has long been a must-have for aficionados.

There’ll be two new DVD versions of Don’t Look Back – a single disc release of the original film, remastered, plus a new 2DVD package:

Disc 1:
* Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back
* Commentary by director D.A. Pennebaker and tour road manager Bob Neuwirth
* Five additional uncut audio tracks
* Alternate version of the Subterranean Homesick Blues cue-card sequence
* Original theatrical trailer
* Pennebaker filmography
* Bob Dylan discography
* Cast and crew biographies

Disc 2:
* Bob Dylan 65 Revisited – new documentary compiled by Pennebaker from over 20 hours of unseen footage
* Commentary by Pennebaker and road manager Bob Neuwirth
* book (168pp) including a complete transcript, over 200 photos, and a new foreword by Pennebaker
* Collectible Subterranean Homesick Blues flipbook

Don’t Look Back on DVD is due for release in N America on 27 February, so presumably in the UK on Mon 26 February or Mon 5 March.

It’s a must-buy, even for those like me who’ve had the VHS and original DVD versions for years – a well-conceived new product, with loads of added value in the new two disc package.

Your chance to vote for Dylan in TIME magazine’s 100 list

Bob Dylan is included on TIME magazine’s list of contenders for the annual TIME 100 list, “which showcases the most influential people who shape our world, and is inviting votes for the people they feel should be part of the 2007 TIME 100 List.”

http://tinyurl.com/23xeeb

Whether Dylan would thank you is a different matter: I’d cross the street to avoid most of the people on this list. The ones I’ve heard of, that is.

BOBMANIA: #1, Dyl-Time Theme Radio Hour

There’s just no limit to…

…the zeal and creativity of Dylan fans.

I’ve been enjoying a series of lovely monthly podcasts by Mel Prussack in New Jersey, in which he gently parodies Theme Time Radio Hour.

But, instead of playing oldey timey musical influences like Uncle Bob, Mel plays a rich selection of little-heard Zim recordings, punctuating them with the musings of a knowledgeable Dylan superfan.

Well worth a listen!

Here’s how Mel introduced himself:

“If you are truly interested in celebrating the work of Bob Dylan you should listen to "Dyl-Time Theme Radio Hour". It has been going on for 8 months now and it truly celebrates Bob's work. Why not put a link to the show on your wonderful site?

http://dylanshrine.podOmatic.com/

“To hear an interview I did on "The Dylan Shrine" you can google my name (mel Prussack) and check out the interview on NPR (national public radio). There is also a chapter on my museum in the book by Tracy Johnson "Encounters With Bob Dylan".”

Mel Prussack is also curator of a private museum, The Dylan Shrine!

Rave on, Mel! Your enthusiasm brought extra sunshine into my life!

Stuttgart review

Thanks to Bruce Ford:

“I've been a Dylan fan for about 35 years now; however, it's been 10 years since I last saw him. This show was everything I expected from him and more.

“The band was superb and Bob's voice was great, but most of all he was fantastic on the harp! Great selection of songs! Can't wait to see him again - he's timeless and ageless (and a fellow Minnesotan)!”

Dates for American summer tour/new song/Rolling Stone interview

* Dylan’s American summer tour itinerary is now on www.bobdylan.com; presales for selected venues start tomorrow

* earlier today, www.rollingstone.com was carrying an audio interview that mag founder Jann Wenner conducted in Amsterdam with Dylan

* Dylan has contributed Huck’s Tune to an OST CD for a new film, Lucky You. Album on sale in US tomorrow, and two weeks today in UK.

Elliott Landy exhibition opens next week

Thanks to (rock photographer) Lawrence Kirsch for sending a link to an NME news story of an exhibition of the photography of Elliott Landy, due to open in London next week.

Landy is best known for his Woodstock-period Dylan shoots. His work also adorns the cover of Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey album, and he photographed many other 1960s/70s rock musicians.

Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan: encore

Thanks to Andrew Billington:

“You've posted a fairly negative opinion of the Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan series.

“I'd like to venture a different opinion, which seems to be shared by many other people who have downloaded the discs in their hundreds and commented favourably too.

“The series is clearly a labour of love for the compiler, who has gone to a great deal of effort not only to compile the tracks, but to supply each volume with a unifying theme, sound and sequence, which is not that easy now it's up to volume 22.

“Though, as with most compilations, the quality is variable, and one man's meat is another man's poison, just looking at the song titles (let's take volume 22, as the track listing is right on my screen here) suggests this isn't a lazy 'greatest hits' show: Ye Playboys And Playgirls, Tiny Montgomery, Sign On The Window.

“If nothing else, they make me return to the originals with fresh ears, hearing what is there and what is not. As for the slighting reference to 'massed ranks of tedious Americana hopefuls' in the piece you published: volume 22 features, among others, Mary Black, Thea Gilmore, Robyn Hitchcock and Ron Sexsmith. Need I say more?

”For what it's worth, I think the old advertising campaign had it right, and that Bob Dylan is the best performer of his own material (and others' too, come to that, but that's another argument for another time). I think that's part of the point of the series: it is, after all, entitled Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan. It's a lot of fun hearing them try, though.

”A final note: I was disappointed to read that the discs are for sale, as they are freely available from at least one well-known bit torrent site.

”It's a shame that anyone would pay for them, beyond remuneration for the CDs and cases. I'm happy to offer copies of volume 22, which is an hour away from arriving on my PC as I type, to people on this basis.

“Or they could just find a bit torrent site and discover the joys of all the other volumes, along with lots of other wonderful commercially unavailable music, for themselves.”

A pub rock blues band: review of last night’s London show - Europe tour news 28

Thanks to Mick Nixon:

“The view from my central second row seat gave me a fresh insight into Bob Dylan’s live performance: jerking, reacting to the music, rocking as the power increased.

“Dylan was consistently deeply intense on the reading of his words: at times tender – sometimes spitting out the rhyme – occasionally grinning - appearing to amuse himself at his vocal delivery or a personal favourite line.

“Being so close I could pick out the instruments from the stage amps – which was particularly helpful with Bob’s impressive guitar work at the beginning – the band supplied solid rhythm as he played his blue notes, picking and strumming.

“Personal highlights were Ain’t Talking and Hattie Carroll – although I have to say the band clearly enjoyed the up-tempo songs, particularly Highway 61 and Summer Days.

“Being so close to the action made me feel that I was watching a pub rock blues band in a smoky club, and, believe me, I could pay no higher compliment!”

Every second was pure gold: review of London last night - Europe tour news 22

Thanks to Julian Moseley:

“Over the hill? Last night's crowd yelled a thunderous ‘No’ at him as Bob played with us about his longevity in Spirit On The Water. But mostly we danced as the song and dance man played. And here's what he played:

“Cat's In The Well
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
Watching The River Flow
It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
The Levee's Gonna Break
The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll
Rollin' And Tumblin'
Spirit On The Water
Highway 61 Revisited
John Brown
When The Deal Goes Down
Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I'll Go Mine)
Ain't Talkin'
Summer Days
Like A Rolling Stone
Thunder On The Mountain
All Along The Watchtower

“All of it with his superb band looking like a gang of riverboat gamblers in their grey suits and assorted black hats. These were men not to be trifled with. Blistering guitar solos, pounding bass, delicate steel and knock-out drums. Bob started on Fender Stratocaster then moved to a Fender Rhodes.

“I had elected for seats to the left of stage and my choice was perfect as he was looking my way most of the night. It was a very personal occasion, I felt.

“He backed that up by singing Don't Think Twice, my first love from Freewheelin, my first album. And Hattie Carroll from Times They Are A-Changin’ - a song that moved me so much at fifteen that I copied out the lyrics and read them aloud in A Level English as a piece of powerful contemporary poetry.

“Highway 61 floored me. Such bite, such tight rock. It's Alright Ma was a relentless rap, which it always was I suppose. And Summer Days was pure Sun studios R&R. Of course when he sang about the Levee breaking, it wasn't just as a warning to the world about global warming or the plight of New Orleans. It was a warning about the state of the human condition - and he hadn't even heard the news about Virginia Tech at the time.

“I've only seen Bob Dylan once before, from the back of the Docklands Arena and then it was a case of guess the song as he disappeared behind your thumb. This was the way to see him, five rows back. It was like being in a small club. It cost a pound a minute and every second was pure gold.

“We howled for the encore and it came after five minutes. After Watchtower the band gathered round Bob and the lights came on. We stood and cheered and he looked at us and nodded his thanks. I have been close to Bob Dylan for forty three years. He has shaped so much of my life and been a constant guide. He has never disappointed. Tonight he was better than he has ever been.

London first night review (2) - Europe tour news (22)

Thanks to Sharon Hill:

“Having grown up with the music of Dylan, courtesy of my dad, I was so excited to be finally seeing him live, but also with some trepidation; would the show live up to expectations or would I be greatly disappointed? He is knocking on a bit now: would his voice be up to the job or would he be flagging?

“I had no need to worry. I must admit at first I was a bit disappointed that the old favourites weren’t the acoustic versions of the originals, but once I got over that initial surprise I was totally enamoured of the man. The reworked songs of my childhood were no less favourable, just different!

“The whole night was fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised by how good his voice was live and amazed at what a great musician he is. I honestly wasn’t expecting such a great show. This concert exceeded all my expectations and I went home happy that my perception of the great man hadn’t changed!

“Well done, Bob – can’t wait to see you again!”

London (first night) review - Europe tour news (21)

Thanks to Gerald Bamford, song and dance man in Back Pages, the Norfolk-based Dylan tribute band:

“Like Saturday’s Sheffield show, London on Sunday was hugely enjoyable. Dylan’s now doing what other rockpop acts have always done, but what he occasionally didn’t do - touring the new album.

“While promoting Modern Times and “Love And Theft”, the classic repertoire is sampled in exactly the same style. So the new versions of old songs fit into a show with a consistent r‘n’b/rockabilly style typical of the latest two releases, played as well as you’d hope in an arena setting.

“Highlight at Wembley: an amazing Nettie Moore. It’s a lovely ballad, and Dylan sang a beautifully arranged version which allows the emotion of the song to shine through. Denny’s Freeman’s guitar was remarkable.

“Blind Willie McTell, played here on the tour for the first time, was enriched by Donnie Herron’s banjo.

“This band is for bopping, so you don’t get the dynamic variety you used to when Dylan switched from acoustic to electric and back, as in the shows at the turn of the Millennium. And you don’t get the intense, varied emotional palette of great shows like Portsmouth in September 2000.

“The Sheffield and London shows I attended were an enjoyable summary of where Dylan’s peerless performance art is right now. And that’s all right with me.”

Sheffield last night – two reviews - Europe tour news (20)

Thanks to Nick Hall for his pithy review:

“Dylan kicked ass tonight in Sheffield! Truly, a great gig!”

Thanks also to Gerald Bamford, who’s been going to see Dylan since being enlisted to boo at the 1966 Cardiff gig.

He’s now the song and dance man in Back Pages, the Norfolk-based Dylan tribute band. Hmmm… Dylan played My Back Pages for the first time on the tour in Sheffield last night. I wonder…?

“Sheffield was a strong, enjoyable gig. It had a cohesive style which made it hang together. The newer material came across strongly. Highlight was High Water. The band was in control of the material throughout, with some deft arrangements. They even looked darned good.

“The sound from our seats near the front was excellent. But the crowd insisted on standing, for what was really a laid-back gig intended for listening, not bopping.

“A fine performance. On to London for Sunday’s gig.”

House of the Risin’ Sun - Europe tour news (19)

Just in case any Dylan Daily reader missed Bobby’s wry humour by slipping House of the Risin’ Sun into the Euro tour set list in Newcastle last night…

Newcastle (upon Tyne), the handsome, most northerly of English cities, was the home of The Animals, the English Invasion band who had a massive hit single with the song, after Dylan had featured it on his eponymous debut album.

Good to see Uncle Bob paying homage to England’s second best ‘60s band. (The Rolling Stones, not The Searchers, if you were wondering!)

Glasgow – a third review - Europe tour news (17)

Thanks to Craig McAllister:

“Hi - I am a long-time lurker/reader of your excellent dylandaily site. Here is a link to another review of last night's Glasgow show:

http://philspector.wordpress.com/

Glasgow: "exhaustingly good"- Europe tour news (16)

Thanks to Jamie Black:

“Here is my review of the gig last night. And what a gig it was!

“Dylan at SECC 11/04/07 - You hear the scare stories about Dylan gigs, with even diehard fans warning you what to expect. My biggest worry was that he was going to just churn out the songs in a disinterested drawl, making the whole thing a token gesture for all concerned.

“But this gig surpassed even my childish excitement as he powered through some unexpected classics as well as relishing the fresh energy of Modern Times.

“One of the highlights of the show was his rendition of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, which was as true to the ethos of H61 as you could ask. But he didn't pull any punches on his foray into Blonde on Blonde either, with some rousing harp playing on You Go Your Way And
I'll Go Mine, and uncompromising vocals on Stuck Inside of Mobile.

“A brilliant surprise came with the rendition of John Brown, this version staying true to its folky origins but gaining a dramatic grip on the audience with the help of Dylan's band.

“As I expected, songs from Modern Times were excellent live, and again all credit to the class and craftsmanship of the big man's fellow musicians. Rollin' and Tumblin' sticks out as an example of pure passionate power, but his delicate performances of Levee’s Gonna Break and Ain't Talkin' were nothing less than exquisite.

“To cut a very long story too short, Dylan was simply on his game last night. His vocals were perfectly delivered in almost every instance, capturing the unique drama and grasp of poetic performance that characterise the classics we know and love. The music was beautiful and uncompromising as Dylan took on joy, passion, love and murder to maximum cathartic effect.

“The whole thing was exhaustingly good.”

Review of Glasgow last night - Europe tour news (15)

Thanks to David Harris:

“Bob doesn't do Edinburgh, so we have to come to the soulless metal tent on the Clyde to see him, with 10,000 others. No matter, we're sold on the Master anyway and the pilgrimage is always good for building up the excitement.

“I'm taking my 19 year old son to his first meeting with Bob and have paid a fortune to touts for front row seats. Band had had a day off, having done 2 nights in Amsterdam Sunday and Monday.

“As expected, he opened with a rocky "Cat's in the well", followed by "Aint me babe", reminding us all that he can do as many versions of these as he chooses.

“ "Just like Tom Thumbs Blues" ran into "Its alright Ma", and I'm in heaven with the rest of the baldy aficionados in row A. It’s a bit disappointing to see that the son is not quite so smitten - he doesn’t know all the lyrics, though, and that’s the problem. Meanwhile Bob switches to organ and can be seen flexing his stiff old shoulders in the gaps between numbers as the strain on this rocking old man briefly shows.

“The Levee’s gonna break" - a favourite. “When the deal goes Down” was easy listening and beautifully sung. “You go your way and I’ll go mine" was a bit raspy and fairly tuneless… a low point for me.

"John Brown" was the surprise of the evening, taking us right back to the ‘60s and reminding us that Vietnam and Iraq are the same show. "Rolling and Tumbling" rolls along. "Hard Rain" - one of the best. "Spirit on the Water" was and is a bit schmaltzy for me. "Stuck inside of mobile " a wee bit messy for my liking. "Ain’t talkin" – memorable. "Summer days" - a worn-out star... Naw!

“Beautifully crafted "Rolling stone" was the band at their best, I thought. The encore was "Thunder on the Mountain" and the inevitable Watchtower.

“Overall, this was a memorable gig, as you would expect from the master craftsman. His voice was missing some of the time and the band were good, but not as slick as some he’s had. You just can’t help but wonder at this living legend who still packs them in young and old.

“Welcome back to Scotland, Bob. We know your heart really is in the Highlands.”

Three “grey market” Dylan albums available online from top Spanish retailer

After The Dylan Daily wrote about an unofficial disc, Midnight Train, encountered in El Corte Ingles, the leading Spanish department store chain, reader Andrew Kelly ordered it and some other interesting looking Dylan product online from El Corte Ingles.

Thanks to Andrew for this report on his purchases, and especially for his detailed detective work:

“The discs arrived earlier this week as promised by ECI. Two doubles and one single (Midnight Train), mostly cut-and-paste compilations of varying sound quality, which appear to have been burned privately from vinyl.

'Midnight Train' is the only one that remotely approaches sine qua non status. Track listing hereunder, provenances/attributions as per Clinton Heylin's listings in "Behind closed doors"

* Midnight Train
1. Midnight train
2. Can you please crawl out your window
3. I wanna be your lover (Biograph version)
4. Number one
5. Visions of Johanna(Nightingale's code version)
6. She's your lover now (Bootleg series Vol 1-3 version)
7. Jet pilot (Biograph version - see note below)
8. If you gotta go (European single version)
9. One too many mornings (Bootleg Series Vol 4, Live 1966 version)
10. Like a rolling stone (Bootleg Series Vol 4, Live 1966 version)

I had not come across 1, 2 and 4 before, but from the instrumentation and vocal timbre I would place them in the mid-‘60s. All three unexceptional, and perhaps 3 - a trudging instrumental warm-up - might be better titled Number 2. Track 7 is the Biograph version but at 1m 34s has a longer instrumental fade.

* Bob Dylan Vol 1, John Birch Society Blues (Exit Records CDX 2504 S)
1. Talking John Birch Society blues (Bootleg Series Vols 1-3 version)
2. Corrinna, Corrinna (sic) (B-side of Mixed up confusion single)
3. East Laredo (Times they are a-changin out-take)
4. In the evening (Minneapolis tape 22.12.61)
5. I'll keep it with mine (Biograph version)
6. Ramblin' gamblin' Willie (Bootleg Series Vols 1-3 version)
7. Mixed up confusion (Single version)
8. Who killed Davey Moore? (Bootleg Series Vols 1-3 version)
9. Long John (Minneapolis tape 22.12.61)
10. Percy's song (Biograph version)

* Bob Dylan Vol 2, Cocaine Blues
1. Cocaine blues (Minneapolis tape 22.12.61)
2. Candy man (Minneapolis tape 22.12.61)
3. Who you really are (Minneapolis tape 22.12.61)
4. Wade in the water (Minneapolis tape 22.12.61)
5. Fare thee well (Minneapolis May 1961, see below)
6. Only a hobo (Blind Boy Grunt/ Whitmark demo version)
7. California (Bringing it all back home out-take)
8. Stealin' (Minneapolis 22.12.61)
9. V.D. blues (Minneapolis 22.12.61)
10. Let me follow you down (sic) (Minneapolis 22.12.61)
11. Hard times in New York (Bootleg series vols 1-3)
12. Man of constant sorrow (Minneapolis 22.12.61)

5 is wrongly listed on the case as "Farewell Angelina"

* Bob Dylan - OK Records CD 5302
1. Blowin' in the wind (Concert for Bangladesh version)
2. All I really want to do (Another Side of version)
3. One too many mornings (Times they are a-changin' version)
4. California (As Vol 2, track 7, above)
5. She belongs to me (Bringing it all back home version)
6. Ballad of a thin man (Bootleg Series Vol 4, Live 1966 version)
7. Lay, lady, lay (Before the flood version)
8. I want you (Blonde on blonde version)
9. Baby, let me follow you down (Bootleg series Vol 4, Live 1966 v)
10. Only a hobo (As above)
11. I don't believe you (Bootleg series Vol 4, Live 1966 version)
12. Outlaw blues (Bringing it all back home version, listed on case as "Love minus zero")

* Bob Dylan - OK records, CD 5303
1. A hard rain's gonna fall (Bangladesh version)
2. The times they are a-changin (official LP version)
3. Tell me, mama (Bootleg Series 4, Live 1966, listed on case as "Tell me that it isn't true")
4. Maggie's farm (Bringing it all back home version)
5. Leopard-skin pillbox hat (Live 1966 version)
6. Positively 4th Street (Official single version)
7. Rainy day women nos. 12 + 35 (Before the flood version)
8. Spanish Harlem incident (Another side of version)
9. Knockin' on heaven's door (See below)
10. Man of constant sorrow (As 3.12 above)
11. On the road again (Bringing it all back home version)
12. Just like Tom Thumb's blues (See below)

Tracks 9 and 12 are live recordings that I can't place. Possibly from 'Real live' of which I have no copy and have not heard for a long time. They have the sound and feel of the late 80s early 90s (ie a bit formulaic).

Hope all that is of help to anyone considering buying the discs.

“All the best and enjoy the spring tour.”

Freewheelin’ – most valuable Dylan collectable

Thanks to Martin Cowan:

“Further to your earlier mention of April's Record Collector magazine for the second part of its Theme Time selection, this issue also contains a one page analysis of the early and unreleased version of "Freewheelin’..."

“As well as providing an interesting insight into why certain songs were removed and replaced by others, the feature also labels this album as the most valuable Dylan collectable.

“Interesting reading for any Dylan fan.”

ORIGINAL POST:

Another new must-buy: Record Collector, April 2007

The new (April) issue of Record Collector has the second half of the excellent two-part feature on Theme Time Radio Hour.

Planet Airwaves, compiled by Jason Draper, is a ten page article with the transcript of Dylan’s broadcast comments on over 60 of the artists featured in his weekly radio show, covering artists with surnames L-Y.

It’s filled out by some nice photos, and the magazine’s valuable guide to CDs carrying the songs featured on Dylan’s magnifico shows.

Like the March issue (see below), the April issue of Record Collector is highly recommended.

Another collectable Dylan cover - Bruce Langhorne feature in Indie On Sunday mag

Yesterday’s Independent magazine section had a collectable Dylan cover for a feature article on Bruce Langhorne - according to the mag, the inspiration for Mr Tambourine Man.

You missed the collectable, but you can read the text here:
